Life Legacy

Mary Miller Ott, a dedicated volunteer for many good causes whose life centered on her family and friends, died peacefully after a long illness on Friday, January 4, 2013. She was 71 years old.
Mary graduated from Clayton High School and received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Missouri, and her master's degree in nursing from Washington University. She served as director of nursing in the Pediatric Clinic Research Unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital, where she was also a nursing instructor.
She had a keen interest in the decorative arts and a fine eye for quality. She was a docent at the St. Louis Art Museum for over 20 years and was elected president of the docents in 1989. She especially loved giving tours to children. She was active in, and became president of the Decorative Arts Society at the museum, and also served on the museum's board of trustees. She played an active role in the Children's Art Bazaar for 20 years.
She was an enthusiastic and dedicated gardener and the garden she created at her home frequently appeared on garden tours, including tours sponsored by national organizations. She was on the Board of Directors of Gateway Greening and was a long time member of Garden Club of St. Louis, which she served as president.
Gardening was a passion. She loved to show plants and to arrange flowers, and was a regular on garden tours in and away from St. Louis. She became an Ikebana teacher early in her marriage while she and her husband lived in the Philippines. While there, the Otts traveled extensively through the Far East.
Mary also served on the board of directors of the Mercantile Library Association and was a long time member of the Women's Society of Washington University, where she agreed to stay on as president for an unprecedented third year to help obtain funding for the Elizabeth Danforth Scholarships. She was interested in education and was a member of the board of directors of Eden Laboratory School, Community School and Churchill School where she created enrichment classes for children.
She loved to entertain and was a brilliant hostess, welcoming old St. Louis friends, newcomers and foreign visitors to her home and table. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
Mrs. Ott is survived by her husband of 45 years, F. Thomas Ott, M.D., her son, David Ott (Lily) of St. Louis; her daughter, Molly Ott Ambler (William) of New York City; and three granddaughters, Annabelle and Caroline Ott, and Sally Ambler. She was predeceased by her parents Orator O. Miller and Gladys Baker Miller of Clayton.
Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at The Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George, Wydown at Ellenwood, Clayton on Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the Great Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Botanical Garden, the St. Louis Art Museum or the Garden Club of St. Louis. Condolences at www.luptonchapel.com.
